THE SHORT
FAMILY

SELL WHAT YOU DON'T OWNFamily motto since 1609

In 1609, Isaac le Maire borrowed shares of the Dutch East India Company in Amsterdam and sold them: the first recorded short sale. Four centuries later the family wears matching black-and-yellow tracksuits and runs the same business on-chain: borrow the asset, sell it, buy it back, return it.

$SFAM is the commemorative meme token of the Short Family. Chain, contract address and allocation are TBD.

    ISAAC LE MAIRE

    c.1558 – 1624 · Amsterdam

Borrowed shares of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) and sold them: the first recorded short sale. The VOC was then the largest listed company in the world, and the market had traded in one direction only. The Dutch banned short selling in 1610; the ban was reissued several times and short selling never stopped.

    JAY GOULD

    1836 – 1892 · New York

Allied with Fisk and Drew against Vanderbilt's long position. The long-short battles of the era turned shorting from a tool of a few into standard Wall Street practice; members of Congress called short sellers “enemies of the nation”.

    SEC RULE 10a-1

After the 1929 crash the public demanded a ban on short selling. The SEC did not ban it and introduced the uptick rule instead: a short sale may execute only on an uptick. Shorting gained a legal framework and institutional money followed.

    Altcoin perpetuals

    fl. 2023 H2 – 2025 Q3

Exchanges listed altcoin perpetuals at a pace of roughly one per week, while altcoin volume and activity declined over the same period. The branch died without issue.

    • Market makers could not hedge inventory risk, pulled back their quotes, then left
    • Funding rates were manipulated; shorts that were right kept paying
    • Synthetic positions put no sell orders on spot and did not constrain whoever controlled the float
    • Perp and spot were separate pools; with thin liquidity the prices decoupled
    • Required listing approval and oracles; long-tail assets had neither

Code of Conduct

HOUSE RULES

Six rules of conduct for family members.

  1. 01

    Source of the asset

Every short must be backed by real borrowed tokens sold on the spot market. Synthetic positions do not count as family assets.

  2. 02

    Obligation to cover

Every short contains an immediate sell order and a buy order that must execute later. What is sold must be bought back and returned.

"...must buy it back or go to pris'n." D.Drew
  3. 03

    Price reference

Only the spot price counts. Spot margin has one market, so perp and spot cannot decouple.

  4. 04

    Carrying cost

Priced at the borrow rate, which lending supply and demand sets and the long-short ratio cannot distort. The family does not pay manipulated funding rates.

  5. 05

    Status of rules

Shorting is subject to rules. The principle set by the 1938 uptick rule: regulate shorting, do not abolish it.

  6. 06

    Price discovery

Longs and shorts trade against each other with real capital on the spot market; a price is credible only after shorts have tested it.

When criticism is not allowed, praise loses its meaning. When shorting is not allowed, going long loses its meaning too.
